Seeking Digital Perfection is Counterproductive?
Seeking Digital Perfection is Counterproductive?
Seeking Digital Perfection is Counterproductive?
When it comes to creating online digital content, I would argue that it’s a big mistake to try to always shoot for perfection.
Why? I believe that seeking perfection can be counterproductive for many reasons.
“The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection”.
George Orwell.
There is a mindset that if you cannot do it really well don’t do it at all.
Yes, true in an ideal world and even then, what is perfection – is it achievable? What is the perfect photo? Is it only actually a matter of taste?
Perfectionism will slow you down, and it’ll also ultimately limit the success you can achieve from your efforts…
Seeking perfection can stop you from getting your content out there
I consider that there’s actually no such thing as a ‘perfect’ digital marketing strategy or campaign.
If there was, we would all be using it!
In the marketing arena, there will always be something that could be improved upon or an area that didn’t quite hit the mark perfectly in your mind. That goes for most things in life.
Remember your website (and its content) can always be improved (later), as can your graphics or any of your digital content.
“There’s no such thing as perfect. Chasing ”Perfect” is the shortest road to not achieving it.”.
― .
Lots of your marketing materials such as graphics will always be subjective anyway.
Thinking back, I cringe at some of the layouts I used, but guess what I still had an audience and along the way because I tried things got better and by just creating new skills were far more easily learned.
If you continually strive to make your work perfect before putting it up there, you will either end up forgetting about it, or you’ll wait so long that the opportunity that was originally there for the content relevance is gone.
Do your best as best you can and then just run with it!
Actually, in the short to medium term you will learn more and more as you practice and learn from that practice.
You can learn an awful lot from your failures
What happens when we make a mistake or find that something doesn’t quite work out how we expected? We learn from it and receive a valuable lesson on what not to do next time – or how to improve on it. Likewise, we also learn from our successes because they signal that we need to do more of something.
Shooting for perfection means that you will ultimately limit your success because you will never truly learn from your mistakes. This doesn’t mean that you should skimp on digital marketing or deliberately put something out there that you know is poor quality – but what it DOES mean is that you should research, plan, launch and then closely monitor your results. Stay in tune with what’s actually happening and then learn from your failures (and successes).
In summary, I believe that perfection doesn’t exist.
You should do everything in your power to make sure that your digital marketing as good as it possibly can be and then just go with it. Start small, learn and practice, track your results and over time you will be happier and happier with your efforts.
My Closing Thoughts:
- You cannot do it all yourself so don’t
- Pick your ideal platform that you intend to use & immerse yourself in it before moving to the next
- Beware of shiny objects – most will sit on your hard drive
